What is Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists Coverage?
We get this question a lot and I just offered the full explanation to one of our customers this morning- so I thought it would be a good thing to review in our blog.
Uninsured/Under-insured Motorists (UIM) Coverage- If you have ever had to use this coverage, or know someone who has, you probably understand how important this part of your auto insurance policy really is. Think about it this way- If you were to get into an accident with a driver who did not have any insurance coverage (or who didn’t have enough to pay for your injuries) who would then pay for the rest of your medical bills? Having uninsured motorists coverage provides for your injuries and/or medical bills in this type of situation.
In 2006, it was estimated that across the country, the chances were about one in seven that the at-fault driver in any given accident was uninsured. While these statistics vary state-to-state, it is easy to see why Uninsured/Under-insured Motorists protection is so important.
If you are not sure whether your auto insurance coverage provides UIM coverage, be sure to ask your agent.
