Electric Cars are the Buzz in Bay Area, San Francisco

Saturn's Flextreme E-Flex Concept Vehicle

Saturn's Flextreme

When electric cars made their debut a few years ago it did not take long before their popularity began to fade. The models that were released had  a low driving range, and were difficult to charge.

In the near future, however, a glimmer of hope is visible on the horizon for electric cars.

In the Bay Area of San Francisco, a private firm recently announced their plan to spend up to $1 billion to put up a service network to cater to a new generation of imports and Detroit-built electric vehicles.

Basically, their goal is to make the Bay Area an electric car friendly town. The company is proposing to install thousands of parking-meter size plugs in home, lots, garages and shopping center for electric fill-ups. Battery swapping spots will also be included where spent power packages can be switched out for charged ones.

While it may be up to two years before any major changes are seen in the area, the Bay is a definitely a prime choice city for the plan as electric cars are known to work best in dense urban area with limited driving ranges.

Local environmentalist hope this change will prove beneficial for the quality of air in the city while consumerists predict added benefits for car owners who will save money on vehicles and gas.

Other alternative fuel vehicles may also take a stake in the future of the automotive industry (natural gas, clean diesel, hydrogen, cooking oil).

Volkswagen Jetta TDI wins Green Car of the Year

GREEN CAR OF THE YEAR

Today, at this year’s L.A. Auto Show, hybrid vehicles took a step to the side as the diesel-powered Volkswagen Jetta TDI won the Green Car of the Year Award.

The Jetta TDI has earned fuel ecnonmy ratings of 31 m.p.g. in the city and 41 m.p.g. on the highway.

Diesel cars have been popular throughout the years in Europe where they make up 50 percent of all new car sales. In the U.S., diesel cars account for less than 1 percent  of new car sales.

Other vehicles competing against the TDI were the BMW 335d diesel, the Ford Fusion hybrid and the Saturn two-mode hybrid. The Volkswagen TDI has an estimated MSRP of $21,900 for the sedan and $23,590 for the station wagon.

Judges consisted of editors from the Green Car Journal as well as Jay Leno, Carroll Shelby, Sierra Club Officials and Jean-Michel Cousteau.

How to Winterize your Vehicle- from the experts at Jeff Gordon Chevy

Is your car ready for the cold winter season?

Winter weather can be rough on your automobile.  Don’t let the chilly temperatures and frozen snow get the best of your car this winter season.  AutoInsuranceQuotes.com has teamed up with the auto experts at Jeff Gordon Chevrolet to give you these helpful tips for making sure that your vehicle is ready for the cold spell:

#1- Check your antifreeze- Make sure your antifreeze has the correct concentration of antifreeze to water.  Your best bet is to ask a local mechanic as the appropriate concentration can depend on your climate.

#2- In severe winter temperatures, you may have to change the grade of your engine oil.  Check your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual for the viscosity grade recommended for your vehicle’s engine.

#3-Flushing your cooling system and replacing the coolant can help remove contaminants and keeps your cooling system performing optimally.

#4- Replace windshield wiper blades- cold temperatures can make blades brittle and ice on the windshield can cause nicks in the blades, decreasing performance.

#5- Have your battery serviced because batteries are more inclined to fail in the cold weather.  Most cold weather breakdowns happen because batteries aren’t delivering full cranking power. While you’re there, get an electrical test as well to make sure your car’s electrical systems are running efficiently.

#6- Check tire pressure as cold air makes air pressure drop.  Newer cars often contain tire light monitor sensors which will alert you if your tires are dropping in pressure levels.  You may notice these sensors come on more in the morning when temperatures are lower but turn off later in the day. This may be a reaction to the cold weather and not an indication that your tires need more pressure.

#7 -Check your lights, heater and defroster.  Keep your windshield clean and make yourself as visible as possible on the road.

#8 -Keep your gas tank as full as possible to prevent moisture from freezing in the lines

#9- Get your brakes checked- the last thing you want in icy weather are faulty brakes.

Top 10 Auto Insurance Myths- Debunked

Do owners of red cars pay more for auto insurance? Is liability coverage required in every state? Do you know the truth about auto insurance?  Read on to see some of the most commonly mistaken myths about car insurance:

10. Every state requires liability insurance.

FALSE.  While most states do require liability insurance, some states do not.  Despite whether the state requires liability or not, it is never a good idea to drive without liability coverage. If you were in an accident, were found at-fault and had no liability coverage- you could be sued for all of the damages.

9.  Standard collision coverage protects me against damages caused by windstorms, hail, animal accidents and theft.

FALSE. While collision and liability coverage will cover damages caused by your car colliding with another vehicle or object, you have to have comprehensive coverage if you want to be covered for windstorms, hail, theft or accidents with animals.  Many drivers mistakenly think, for example, that if they hit a deer that this will be covered under their auto collision coverage. This is not true.

8. My new car is covered under my insurance policy automatically.

True and False.  While most car insurance companies will automatically cover a new vehicle, this coverage is temporary and it is your responsibility to tell them about the new vehicle within the amount of time specified in your contract.

7. If my friend gets into an accident in my car their insurance will pay for my damages.

FALSE.  Because it is your car- it needs to be covered by your insurance. While the other driver’s insurance might be used to pay excess damages, it is still primarily paid by your insurance.  Also, even if you were no where near the scene of the accident, your insurance score may be affected.

6.  Drivers of red cars pay more for their auto insurance

FALSE.  It is a common belief that car insurance rates are affected by the car color.  In actuality, the color of a vehicle does not affect the premium at all.  Some factors that do affect your premium are the make and model of car, its safety features, where it is parked most often and what city you live in.

5. No-fault insurance means my premium won’t be affected even if I am in an accident that is my fault.

FALSE.  No-fault insurance means that your insurance company will pay for your damages no matter whose fault the accident is.  It does not mean that your insurance score won’t be affected or that your premiums won’t go up.

4. Males under 25 years old pay the highest insurance rates.

FALSE. While young men under 25 do pay higher insurance rates than female drivers- they are still not the highest paying customers by age group. Teenagers and senior citizens typically pay the highest rates due to the fact that they are involved in more accidents than other age groups.

3.  If I want to switch insurance companies I should just let my current policy lapse.

FALSE.  Letting your current policy lapse can reflect negatively on your credit score.  If you want to switch insurance companies you should officially notify your insurance company that you are cancelling your policy and pay any fees or premium that they require.

2.  My personal insurance will also cover my business use of my car.

FALSE.  If, even occasionally, you use your auto for business purposes, you will need to extend your personal car insurance to cover your business use as well.

1. My credit score does not affect my insurance rate

FALSE.  Your credit score information does play a small role in determining your rates.  Insurance companies will typically reward drivers with lower rates if they have a good credit rating. When you are shopping for auto insurance, companies may check your credit score.  The type of inquiry made is called a “soft inquiry” and does not negatively impact your credit rating. Inquiries from credit card companies, banks and other lenders are considered “hard inquiries” and can negatively impact your credit score.
